About the performance
Recorded in the fascinating Chapel of the Holy Grail in the Metropolitan Cathedral–Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Valencia, AURORA is a seven-piece suite for voice, piano, recorder and contrabass: it comprises four versions of El Rey de Francia, an old Sephardic song, and three compositions based on its first melodic element (a perfect fifth), attempting to metaphorically depict the process of re-connection with the inner-self and to encourage attentive and patient listening.
The music accompanies a book about René Guénon on intercultural dialogue and diversity, published by Mimesis Publishing in Italy: below is Paolo Cognetti’s introduction to Aurora.
The program, in the initial part, will commemorate the Florentine composer M ° Franco Cioci, who recently passed away: Paolo Cognetti, pupil of the Maestro, will play some of his songs.
Paolo Cognetti
Paolo’s debut album as a solo pianist “Rinascita” – co-produced by Lawrence Fancelli – was released in 2017 by OSB Records, delivered digitally by Artist First and published by Warner Chappell. His “Geistervariation VI” for string quartet won the “Abramo Basevi” competition, edition 2019 “Schumann gewidmet”. In 2017, Paolo’s “C(y|ir)cles. In cerca della a-dualità” (“C(y|ir)cles. In pursuit of a-duality”) for accordion and orchestra was awarded the second prize by the international composing competition Concorso 2 Agosto. Two years earlier, in 2015, he had already taken part in the same competition and won the second prize with his “Mare Monstrum, Verso Luce” for narrator, orchestra and electronics, focused on the tragic migration issue from Africa.
As well as being one of the founding members of La Filharmonie (www.lafilharmonie.com), he collaborates also with the Officina Sonora del Bigallo (www.osbstudio.it), both of which are based in Florence.
