Torn by the death of his children Daniel and Blandine, Liszt withdrew from the public scene and moved to a small monastery on Monte Mario, in the suburban area of Rome. Here Liszt turned his gaze to his patron saints, Saint Francis of Assisi and Saint Francis of Paola, and began to write “Franciscan” music, starting from the Canticle of Saint Francis, conceived in 1862 for voice, choir, organ and orchestra, and then transcribed in 1880 for solo piano. In his ascetic retreat he also wrote two other masterpieces: the very famous Deux Légendes, Saint Francis of Assisi: the sermon to the birds and Saint Francis of Paola walking on the waves.
